I recently had the opportunity to read a very good article in the USA Today, my favorite newspaper, about booking airfares on the internet. It was written by a very good writer, Laura Bly.
In it she says that not all internet sites (there are nearly 300 of them) do always deliver the best airfare. She suggests looking at more than one, spend a hour or so checking various prices. When you finally do decide on one you have got to say, "I have found a fair price and I will take it" or you could spend a week. As it is you will need stamina, nerve, and patience.
Here are some things Laura suggests.
1. Get a benchmark fare ---Travelocity is a good place to start. www.travelocity.com
2. Try ITA software---this is an inovative airfare search engine. www.itasoftware.com and its advantage is that it has the ability to display fares to and from nearby airports which may offer cheaper prices.
3. Visit Digital City's Travel Bargain Alert www.digitalcity.com
4. Try www.qixo.com and www.farechase.com Fare Chase has been excellent for me.
5. Do not for get Expedia www.expedia.com Expedia and travelocity do 40% of the on line bookings.
6. Check for web only deals with the airline themselves.
7. Price Line and Expedia Flight Price Matcher have catches. You name your price but can not name your airline or airline and are locked in if your bid is accepted. www.priceline.com
8. www.hotwire.com is new. It spits out a fare and you have 30 minutes to decide whether to buy.
9. Remember there are millions looking for airfare. The price you saw 10 minutes ago may be gone now.
Thanks for the tips Laura and thank you for publishing her informative research USA Today.
USA Today has a wonderful travel section on Fridays. It is also sells an overseas edition.
