The Escargot follows the charming Ouche valley, with
quaint villages in pastoral settings, at the slow pace of the
escargot, the French word for snail! The Burgundy Canal is ideal
for cycling and walking along the towpath. Best known for its fine
wines and hearty cuisine, this part of Burgundy is also noted for its
unique architecture and flamboyant history. We discover Dijon and its
Ducal Palace, the famed Hospice and Wine Market in Beaune, the
medieval castle of Chateanueuf overlooking the canal, and the 15th
century Chateau of Commarin.

Saturday
3:10 pm ~ We meet at the HOTEL REGINA**** PARIS
We have
been working closely with the Hôtel Régina for many years. It is an
elegantly appointed, traditional hotel with a beautiful Art Nouveau
lobby, 116 rooms and suites. The Régina is ideally located next to
the Tuileries gardens and close to the Louvre at 2, place des

From the
hotel we transfer to Gare de Lyon where we take the high speed train
to Dijon. Coach transfer to the Escargot moored near the summit level
of the Burgundy Canal, at Vandenesse-en-Auxois. Welcome champagne
reception followed by dinner on board.

| Sunday
~ Excursion to the elegant 15C Chateau de Commarin. Still privately
owned, the chateau is notable for is beautiful furnishings more than
two centuries old and a unique collections of Renaissance heraldic
trapestries. Visit to the medieval village and Chateau of Chateauneuf
en Auxois overlooking the canal . Cruise to the picturesqus village of
Pont D'Ouche. Thre is pleasant walking and cycling along the
towpaths. Dinner on board. |
| Monday
~ Cruise along the beautiful valley of the river Ouche to the pretty
village of La Bussiere. Excursion to Beaune, the wine capital of
Burgundy,. Guided visit of the fabulous 15C Hospice and its splendid
varnished tiled roof which is probably the finest example of
Burgundian/Flemish arcitecture in existence. The 'Hospices' were built
by Flemish artists and are renowned for the multicolored glazed tiles
on the roof. Much of the wine is stored in the ramparts of this
medieval town. The former residence of the Dukes of Burgundy is now a
wine museum. Dinner on board. |
| Tuesday
~ Morning excursion to Dijon, the capital city of Burgundy. After a
guided visit of the historic center, including the Ducal Palace, we
stroll through the picturesque covered market, that largest in
Burgundy. Cruise to the little village of Gissey. Dinner on
board. |
| Wednesday
~ Morning cruise to Fleurey sur Ouche. Excursion to the village of
Concoeur-Corboin on the upper slopes of the Cotes de Nuits near Nuits
St. Georges where we visit a well known farmer who produces fruit for
the black current (Cassiss) and other liqueurs for which this area is
renowned. |
| Thursday
~ Short cruise to Velars sur Ouche. Excursion to the Clos de Vougeot,
where the monks made wine in the 12th century. See the ancient
winepresses and have a wine tasting in a private cellar. Last cruise
segment to Dijon. Farewell Gala Diner on board |
| Friday
~ After breakfast, transfer to Dijon railway station to catch the TGV
for Paris Gare de Lyon arriving around noon.. |
The route is run in reverse on
alternate weeks. Excursions/mooring places and the route may be modified without
prior notification due to unforeseen circumstances.
